Is the future of car ownership a subscription model?

If you have been keeping an eye out for articles in the automotive industry you may have seen some recent news about cars using subscription services. The one that really caught my eye was the one out from BMW. They have started to sell heated seat subscriptions for $18 a month. This is the harbinger of what is to come.

Now there have always been high end features as add-on options for vehicles of course. Getting those nice leather seats, the sports package, the premium wheels and trim were purchases you took care of when you purchased the car and once you paid for them they were yours. Subscriptions have even been on the playing field for a while but it’s been limited to things like XM radio.

The SAAS (subscription as a service) model is running wild in every part of our lives. We pay for free delivery, we sub to creators online, we sub for our food, we sub for our pets, and our exercise, and our music and about 10 different streaming services and I’m sure many other things. Those streaming wars, it appears, are now coming into our cars, and none more so than our EVs.
