Looking Forward Instead of Behind Us

As the world is grappling with the current political climate, there is an increasing focus on different styles of government, with debates on democracy, autocracy, communism, socialism, and other forms of government. In the United States, there are debates about whether the country is a republic or an autocracy, or whether the country should adopt a European-style socialist system. However, amidst all these discussions, an Iroquois principle, the seventh generation principle, is often overlooked.

The seventh generation principle is a philosophy that emphasizes that the decisions we make today should take into account how they would affect future generations of people, down to the seventh generation. This is equivalent to looking about 150 years into the future. Considering that the world 150 years ago was vastly different from today, it’s essential to contemplate what policies and government decisions made today will impact the world 150 years from now.

We often assume that the future will be an extension of the present, but the rate of technological advancement suggests that the world will be vastly different. The future could include colonies in space, robots roaming the streets, and the possibility that humans may no longer have a place in the workforce.
